We’re looking for an experienced Online Editor to help our audiences navigate the debate on the post-Covid economy. 


The coronavirus crisis has exposed profound problems with the way our economy and society are organised. Many people are arguing that, as we try to recover from the coronavirus crisis, we should not go back to the world we had before. But there’s a cacophony of voices arguing about how we can build back better, making it hard to find meaning in the noise. 


The Beyond Covid website (beyond-covid.org) will enable people to navigate the debate about how to build a more resilient, just and sustainable economy and society, as we move through and beyond the crisis. The website, along with a weekly digest and webinar discussion series, will curate the latest insights from think tanks, academics and practitioners to provide an authoritative, accessible guide to our economy after Covid. 


Working with a range of experts in new economic thinking, we’ve developed a bank of content around the key issues in the debate, on themes including the welfare state, health and social care, the climate crisis, and paying for the recovery. Now we need a creative professional to turn these articles into high-impact web content that becomes an indispensable resource for journalists, policy advisors and political decision-makers. 


About the role


We’re looking for an experienced Online Editor to develop an effective tone of voice and editorial style for the site, and to lead the editorial process prior to and immediately after the website launch. This is a hands-on role, working with some of the most exciting ideas for transforming our economic system and finding high-impact ways to convey them. Our work is highly dynamic and you’ll need to hit the ground running, working with a high level of initiative and providing creative direction for the wider team. 


While this assignment has a short-term focus, your work will lay the foundations for the longer-term development of the Beyond Covid website. It will also inform the development of a permanent, staff position for this role, which will be advertised in September/October 2020. 


Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Reviewing draft content for the site, forming a judgement on the effectiveness of the content for our audiences, and developing a template, tone of voice and style guide for the articles
  • Editing the draft content and commissioning new content in line with these guidelines and supporting other team members and freelance contributors through the editing process
  • Project managing the editing process, to ensure that high volumes of material are developed to high standards within tight deadlines
  • Quality control of pre-publication articles, ensuring consistent tone, accurate use of language, effective cross-referencing of articles, and striking, relevant imagery
  • Developing and implementing a process for commissioning new content
  • Working collaboratively with other team members to ensure the success of the site, particularly those leading on website design and promotion. 


About you


We’re looking for someone with: 

  • Significant experience of writing and/or editing authoritative online content, with the ability to produce concise, engaging, accurate copy 
  • A good understanding of our target audiences: central and local government decision-makers, journalists, and those working in policy in business and civil society
  • The ability to take the initiative, define editorial direction and lead new processes to ensure a high standard of output
  • Excellent project management abilities and an ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • A good knowledge of economic debates and an openness to new economic thinking (an academic qualification in economics is not required) 
  • Highly IT literate, with strong digital expertise
  • A collaborative approach, with the ability to communicate effectively with non-specialists on the team
  • An affinity with ECU’s aims and objectives, and our organisational values of justice, inclusivity, generosity, and collaboration. 


The following qualities would be an advantage, but are not essential: 

  • Experience of developing and launching digital products
  • Knowledge of the economic, environmental and social justice movements.
