We’re hiring a CTO!
Kitchio brings fresh, healthy food to low-income families through recipe boxes tailored to their needs, wants and schedules. Our price point is highly competitive with meal boxes currently on the market, and we aim to build an international food brand over the next few years. We are a startup freshly out of Year Here’s Social Innovation programme, building a diverse and inspiring founding team.
Since Kitchio is so young, this role will be very flexible. You’ll wear many hats and be able to shape our culture as we grow. You will initially work on a freelance basis, with potential to become a cofounder if we work together well.
Note: If you don’t have all the skills but are interested in the position, please get in touch! We’re looking for cultural fit and potential just as much as experience, so don’t disqualify yourself before applying.
Kitchio celebrates diversity and is committed to building an inclusive business that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives and skills. This starts with our founding team, so we strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals and people with disabilities.
We aim to provide feedback on applications but don’t know how much interest we’ll get, so we apologise if this isn’t possible.
Role: Co-founder and CTO (initially freelance while testing fit)
We’re looking for a proactive, problem-solving CTO to build the digital infrastructure that will become the backbone of the business. You’re a creative thinker who can build reliable backend systems and you’re driven by social impact. Looking ahead, you will inspire a team to develop startup-level software that enables Kitchio to challenge the status quo of commercial business. If you’re passionate about using your technical skills for social good, please send a CV and cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line ‘Application: CTO’.
Applications close 4th October 2020.
Responsibilities & duties
Initially, you will build a prototype recipe-planning system based on real-time stock management, modelling recipes and ingredients as objects with learnable attributes. While Kitchio has a vision for the system, you will have freedom and ownership over the project, allowing you to develop it in your own way.
In the long term, you will manage a technical team to design and implement efficient, secure systems to manage stock, supply chains and online ordering. Your future team will also design a learning tool to recommend new recipes based on flavour profiles, seasonality and customer feedback, to deliver the most tasty, healthy and sustainable food we can.
Qualifications & skills
- Strong knowledge of and ability to build secure, data-driven systems (e.g. Amazon Web Services, SQL)
- Back end development (e.g. Python)
- Knowledge of Machine Learning principles
- Ability to implement Machine Learning models (optional)
- Web development (optional)
- Creative thinking
- Technical problem solving
- Enthusiasm for learning new skills
- Entrepreneurial mindset
- Proactive - if you see an issue, you’ll jump in and use your initiative to fix it

Location: Remote, 1+ week per month in London preferred
Working hours: Estimated 20 hours per week, increasing to full time in January 2021. Flexible working hours.
Start date: October 2020
Probationary period: 3 months, ending in a review of the potential to be cofounders with a distribution of equity.
