The role


As Kano continues to grow, we’re looking for a Backend Engineer to join a team building best in class learn-to-code apps and games.


This role will be responsible for helping to set the technical direction of the backend and leading its implementation in a number of exciting new upcoming projects.


The ideal candidate will have worked within cross-functional teams, have a hands-on attitude when it comes to tackling problems and be passionate about building great products.


Responsibilities and duties


  • Work in a cross-functional team of product managers, industrial designers, UX designers and hardware/software engineers to delivery high-quality innovative products
  • Help set the technical direction and lead the implementation of our backend services
  • Discuss and determine product requirements based on technical limitations/opportunities 
  • Research and architect new product features, track and surface risks and implement technical solutions
  • Work with other engineers to plan, prioritise and execute assigned development tasks within deadlines
  • Coordinating internal backend initiatives with any involved third parties
  • Attend stakeholder meetings to communicate project status and speak to technical aspects of the project
  • Advocate best practices across all areas of software development
  • Document your process and articulate development tasks and decisions

Requirements


  • Experience building server-side web applications with NodeJS
  • Experience designing, developing and deploying highly-scalable and resilient backend systems
  • Experience provisioning, configuring and managing cloud infrastructure - ideally in AWS
  • Knowledge of DevOps and SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) principles and practices
  • Excellent knowledge of modern database systems (RDBMS and NoSQL) and when to use each
  • Experience operating and monitoring large-scale production systems
  • Have delivered significant parts of complex projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • At least 5 years commercial development experience


Nice to have


  • Full-stack development experience
  • Interest in security
  • Working knowledge of IaC tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation
